Embryo Donation

This is usually for couples in whom

(a) Both partners are infertile
(b) The woman has a uterus but no functioning ovaries due to premature menopause or surgical removal for the treatment of cancer, pelvic infections and Endometriosis or damaged by chemo/radiotherapy for cancer or women born without functioning ovaries as in Turner’s syndrome or in cases of ovaries that are resistant to stimulation by the pituitary hormone “resistant ovary syndrome”
(c) The man has very poor or no sperm in his ejaculate.

  • Couples who have a high risk of passing on genetic disorders to their offspring.
  • Women with recurrent IVF failures; when both egg and sperm qualities are poor.

Donated embryos are usually sourced in two main ways:

  • Donation of spare embryos from fertile couples who have gone through IVF treatment and have achieved their heart’s desire.
  • Separate egg donation and sperm donation, which are then mixed and fertilized.

As with gamete donors, the woman should be above 18 and below 36years and the man between 18 and 55 years.

The presence of mental disorders or a family history of genetic or inheritable diseases precludes potential donors.
